Day Six: Another Kind of Art

My final post written from the airport lounge at the end of a marvellous research trip.

The mingei exhibition at 21 21 Design site was a radical display of examples from the deep collections of the mingei kan (Japan Folk Craft Museum) displayed in compelling tableau with apt texts from the mingei scholars written on the case side. The gallery is elegant and reticent but happily was full of school parties.

In the Leach Gallery of the Japan Folk Craft Museum. L-R: Yuko Matsuzaki, Mayumi Furuya, Takashi Sugiyama, Simon Olding and Dr Sadahiro Suzuki.

Then on to the Miingei kan to meet up with my good colleagues Yuko Matsuzaki from the Mashiko museum and Leach scholar Dr Suzuki before a good meeting in the director's office and learn about a possible centenary exhibition in 2020. Hopefully great connections for projects to come.
