Ann Hechle: calligraphy as experiment, expression, and vocation
Ann Hechle (1939–) is a major figure in contemporary British calligraphy and the Crafts Study Centre holds significant examples of her work – from her early experiments with the panel format, to major public commissions, and to the extensive private research projects of her mature work. Funding from the Headley Trust c.2004 led to the production of a digital resource which contains digital images relating to and illuminating the work in the collection, including suites of preparatory works - drafts, sketches, technical trials, and time-sheets recording hours spent on the work. These virtual objects enrich our understanding of the context and creation of the finished works physically held at the Centre.
