Professor Lesley Millar will be retiring in September of this year after leading textile research at UCA since 1998. During this time she has curated many ground breaking exhibitions, introducing international textile artists to UK audiences, including her cross-cultural collaborations with Japanese and UK textile artists for which she received the Japan Society Award in 2008. These exhibitions have attracted several hundred thousand visitors over the years and include: Textural Space, Through the Surface, 2121: the textile vision of Reiko Sudo and NUNO, Cloth & Culture Now, Lost in Lace, Cloth and Memory, Here & Now: tapestry today, Kawaii: crafting the Japanese culture of cute, and Fabric, Touch and Identity.
At this lecture she will reference some of these projects, their background and outcomes. The lecture will be followed by a short discussion and Q&A led by Professor Victoria Kelley.
Venue: Film and Media Centre, Nr. Main Carpark, UCA Farnham
The lecture is free but places must be booked here:
The lecture is accompanied by an exhibition at the Crafts Study Centre also titled 'HelloGoodbye' which contains many of the textile related works that have been given to Lesley by artists she has worked with. For most of the work this is the first time it has been exhibited.
The exhibition runs from 23rd May - 2nd September 2023.
