Henry Hammond Lecture 2020: Sara Radstone

This year’s lecture is given by the acclaimed artist Sara Radstone who works in ceramic and mixed media. Her contemporary Angus Suttie wrote that her ceramics ‘are about things from our culture which have been eroded by people and time’, and she joined an illustrious cohort of students in the 1970s at the Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, including Julian Stair and Henry Pim.

Her studios have been situated in London and she has taught at Wimbledon School of Art, Portsmouth Polytechnic and the West Surrey College of Art & Design (the precursor institution to UCA). She has held visiting posts in the USA and has taught on the Diploma Course at the City Lit for over 20 years. Her first major retrospective exhibition was held at CoCA, York Art Gallery in 2018 and revealed ‘an uncanny cross fertilisation between ceramics, history and many other disciplines’. Her works are held in major public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Los Angeles County Museum and the Shigaraki Cultural Park, Japan. The lecture celebrates the life and work of the potter and teacher Henry Hammond (1914-1989) who was Head of Ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art and Design 1946-1980. The Crafts Study Centre is grateful to the Trustees of the Henry Hammond Trust for their support of the annual lectures.
