The workshop will consider Muriel Rose’s life (1897-1986) in craft through an analysis of works held in her personal archive at the Crafts Study Centre. This reveals her many contacts across the world of makers, collectors and government; and the important work she undertook, first in the private sector as the owner of The Little Gallery, Sloane Street London in the 1930s, and then as Craft and Design Officer for the British Council. Her pioneering work with the Rural Industries Bureau will also be considered.
The workshop is timed to coincide with the display of works from her archive in the important exhibition Unbound: Visionary Women Collecting Textiles held at Two Temple Place, London 25th January to 19th April 2020.
The workshop will be led by Professor Simon Olding and Greta Bertram, Director and Curator of the Crafts Study Centre.
