Carol McNicoll (1943-2025)

We were sad to hear last week that Carol McNicoll has passed away. Her ceramic work is brash, loud, expressive and revolutionary, and was part of a generation of ceramic artists who expanded the possibilities for the medium.

An extraordinary double-handled mug made in 1998 by McNicoll features in the CSC's collection (see image above). The decoration of carrots and spring greens flowing from the mug's inside to the handles, the pale blue glaze on the body and bands of darker blue present an abundance of texture and colour. It is a mug that shows McNicoll's humour, skill and deep knowledge of historical ceramics. We will display the work in our ground floor showcase in homage.
