318 Ceramics at the Crafts Study Centre

On Saturday 6th July and Tuesday 9th July, the Crafts Study Centre welcomed students from 318 Ceramics, a local centre of ceramic teaching and practice located at Coxbridge Farm, West Street, Farnham. The visit is part of an ongoing collaboration between 318 Ceramics, Uthe University for the Creative Arts Ceramics and Glass department and the CSC.

After a tour through the exhibitions of the CSC, makers spent time in the Research Room handling some of the highlights from our collection, with expert guidance provided by ceramic artist and Trustee of 318 Ceramics, Kathy Mason and Ashley Howard, Senior Lecturer in Ceramics at UCA. The work retrieved from store was largely from makers who taught in the Ceramics Department of West Surrey College of Art and Design (WSCAD), the pre-cursor institution to UCA, including Henry Hammond, Paul Barron, Siddig el Nigoumi and Takeshi Yasuda.

Their work showed a great variety of techniques – throwing, slip decoration, use of oxides, brushwork, sgraffito as well as the slab-building in the work of Alison Britton. The group discussed reduction firing in the work, as this process lies at the centre of this this UCA-318 Ceramics skills-and-tool exchange.

We look forward to welcoming students of 318 Ceramics back to the CSC and remind readers that the CSC is open for visits/tours for local craft, art and other community groups in Farnham and the wider region. Please get in touch with us at craftscentre@ucreative.ac.uk.
