Selbourne Pottery
/Describe my work
All my work is hand thrown and turned stoneware. No machines or moulds are used and the traditional techniques have taken many years to perfect. The pottery does not try to mimic the past but draws on skills rarely practiced today. Combined with high temperature stoneware glazes, fine brushwork, wax resist and glaze trailing, the finished pots with rich copper red and cobalt blue glazes are both functional and decorative whilst still having a contemporary look.
What inspires me
I love everything handmade. The connection between man, clay and the finished piece. The earth gives a continuity between works from the past to the more modern pieces I create. Form plays an important part in the making so that the finished piece is both visually balanced and ergonomic
About the place I work
I setup my studio 35 years ago in the beautiful and historic Hampshire village of Selborne. Located in the Old Bakery it consists of two showrooms and a workroom. Visitors enter through the cobbled courtyard and can often find me working on the wheel when they arrive.
How Lockdown has affected my work
Working during Lockdown has been less hectic and therefore more enjoyable. It has made me contemplate my work -life balance and perhaps make some changes.
What’s next
Throwing pots that rely on shape rather than decoration appeals to me greatly. I would also like to experiment with making in porcelain using plain celadon glazes to finish.
